Randy Armstrong will be conducting and participating in a Multi-Discipline & Multi-Artist Residency at Holderness School in Holderness, New Hampshire USA on March 6 -11, 14-16, 2022. The residency will be based on the theme “Identity: Becoming & Belonging.”

AB 2022 Narrative—Identity: Becoming & Belonging

Identity cannot be found or fabricated but emerges from within when one has the courage to let go. —Doug Cooper

Who am I? A question often pondered, especially during developing adolescent years when questions about identity can at times make one feel vulnerable, and at other times, empowered. Initially, self-identity is largely fed by family heritage, culture, and gender, and evolves as curiosity about social class, political views, religion and spirituality develops. Exposure to the surrounding world and new experiences further inform one’s perception of themselves and of those around them. Individuals may realign themselves many times, “trying on” what it feels like to participate in the world in a new skin, asking “Where do I belong? Who do I want to be?”. Life decisions, fashion and style often play a big part in communicating these identities to the surrounding world.

Art plays a role in helping one question, explore and express one’s identity. Artward Bound 2022 invites participants to “try on” new identities – those of an actor, a writer, a designer, a storyteller, a maker, etc.. Students are encouraged to submerge themselves in the arts and become something they hadn’t considered before – with an open mind to how it might influence their emerging identity. Afterwards, they might choose to shed it or keep it on for a while or a lifetime.
