Artist-In-Residence

Phillips Exeter Academy African Drumming & World Percussion Ensemble • Randy Armstrong, Director (1991-2020)

World Music Educational Residencies for Schools

Randy Armstrong offers educational residencies in World Music for grades ranging from elementary to high school. Each residency is designed to be age/grade appropriate and last from 1 to 3 weeks.

The residency begins with an opening assembly performance by Randy Armstrong demonstrating up to 50 instruments from around the world. Core student groups then work with Randy in a series of classes/workshops and rehearsals culminating into a public concert on the concluding day of the residency. Experiential residencies are also available without a culminating performance.

The focus is on Instruments and Musical Traditions from around the World, Global Rhythms, West African drumming, original “soundscapes” with creative writing, and choral and/or music ensemble collaborative performances. Randy has a collection of over 300 instruments from around the world. Students and faculty experience hands-on music making together.

A teacher’s guide of music, instructional videos and materials can provided to schools upon request. Teacher workshops and master classes for advanced students are also available.
